soldier dad after more than a year in iraq. >>> good wednesday morning, i'm chris jansing. live from msnbc world headquarters in new york. what we're seeing out in michigan and colorado is nothing short of horrifying. out of control fires ripping through homes and destroying neighborhoods. look what happened in the city of detroit just four hours, 85 separate fires. high winds up to 150 miles per hour spread the raging flames from house to house. you combine those winds with hot, dry weather and downed power lines and you have the perfect storm for disaster. every available firefighter was out trying to get things under control. but the size and number of the blazes was just overwhelming and residents were left to watch their houses burn. >> i had to do what i could. i'm not a fireman, but i can help them point the hose and direct it to the problem. i done what i could. >> my men have got to pace themselves at this point in time. >> i don't have a place to go if that house burns down and i'm going to lose everything. >> it's really bad. you can't hardly see. >> detroit officials think most
for the march to keep fear alive. >>> good friday morning, i'm chris jansing live from msnbc world headquarters in new york. we have some incredible video of that violent and deadly storm that ripped through the new york city area leaving widespread damage. hurricane-force winds uprooted trees as the storm barrelled through the region during rush hour yesterday. this morning, more than 26,000 homes in new york, more than 11,000 more in northern new jersey are still without power. look at these pictures taken from the shore looking at the statue of liberty. here is some of that damage we were telling you about. police say a driver was killed and her passenger injured when a tree fell on a car in queens. neighborhood have been littered with downed trees and tree limbs and residents say the intense storm caught them completely by surprise. >> it just got real dark and then the wind came down like it was a spaceship literally landing on the block and it started shaking and the trees and i got scared. >> investigators with the national weather service still don't know if it officially was a tornado

was a top model mix-up the real deal or a publicity stunt? >>> hello. i'm chris jansing live at msnbc world headquarters in new york city. >>> tropical storm nicole pounding south florida, strong winds, heavy rain. it is expected to last into the evening hours. here is what this morning's commute looked like. this is south florida. the afternoon rush expected to be just as challenging. the rain is already making travel difficult in north carolina as well. flood warnings posted there in several counties. and schools in craven county actually had to close early. eric fisher joins us from ft. lauderdale, florida. wow. looks fun out there. >> oh, yeah. it's a barrel of laughs here in ft. lauderdale. the rain has been coming down. we are waterlogged. some towns have picked up three, four inches of rainfall since yesterday afternoon. as you can see, that rain continues to come down. the main threat with this storm is not the wind. it's not going to be a classic tropical storm. it's just a huge moisture machine. you have to think about this. the center is just south of cuba. the moi
conference in months. >> i'm chris jansing from world headquarters in new york. we have a lot to cover today and, of course, that terrible breaking news this morning. a scene of complete devastation so violent, so fast moving, a fire that is still not under control. right now crews are battling a deadly inferno that has leveled an entire neighborhood in san bruno, california. the explosion came seemingly out of no where. families were just sitting down to dinner watching the football game and then that massive explosion rocked the area, sending a fireball over 1,000 feet into the air. now, the exact cause is not yet clear, but the ntsb will be investigating. what we do know is that a ruptured gas line fueled the flames from one house to another. the inferno could be heard, as well as seen, for miles. more than 50 homes destroyed and dozens more damaged. the human toll is even higher. at least three people confirmed dead and the l.a. times is now putting that number at six, others are still fighting for their lives. one woman said the heat was so intense that if she had gotten anywhere closer

at the moment of impact. good friday morning, i'm chris jansing live from msnbc world headquarters in new york. we begin today with hurricane earl pushing 105-mile-an-hour winds and driving rain. and giving the northeast a beating. so let's tell you what's going on and how it might affect your labor day holiday plans. right now, earl is moving past the outer banks of north carolina and up the coast. it's still not clear just how close this storm will come to cape cod and the massachusetts coastline. take a look at nags head, north carolina, last night as the storm rolled through. while earl is now a category 2 storm there is still concern there could be power outages, damage and flooding. now let's take a look at those nasa images from space. they show just how big earl was at its peak t is still powerful enough to cause 30-foot waves and erode beaches. >> once it starts, you could sit here and watch and the boats are bouncing. >> we have reporters from kill devil hills, north carolina to massachusetts covering earl's impact. let's begin with the weather channel's julie martin in ocean city, m
